Borders of Baden-Württemberg: 1790-1970

During our research we had to create many maps and geographical variables. Here is how we worked with them.

The original research on the administrative borders of the region was conducted by HABW

Published papers such as Wahl, Franke and others follow HABW maps, digitized by hand.

Ciccone uses the German Statistical Office, and works backwards with the list of parishes before 1970 and merges them (or drop).

Braun Franke and Öztürk and Braun and Öztürk use a fine-tuned HABW maps.

Since there was no agreed upon digital border map, there was minor (but important) inconsistencies.

This repository proposed several steps to unify the maps of the region.

1- The archives (leo-bw) use the most detailed digital maps of the region, but they are not easy to find. The scripts in this repository gets them, which you can download from the following button.

2- We matched (1) Map ID’s from the archive, (2) Parish ID’s from the archives (which are different), (3) all the changes over the years to the borders and parishes, (4) linked all units to their respective Wikipedia and leo-bw websites.
